After living at Boys and Girls Country for over 10 years, Helen is living her dream at Sam Houston State University! She is working on a psychology degree and doing well in class. Her first semester has been a wonderful experience so far.
Helen has made great friends with her roommate and several other girls in her dorm. They spend a lot of time together studying and hanging out. In addition to classes, she is involved in several clubs including NAACP, Project Sunshine, Caribbean student organization, and Chi Alpha. Helen told us, “College is an opportunity where I can achieve my goals and dreams. My favorite thing about college is all the new experiences I am having!”
We are especially proud that she volunteers regularly with Project Sunshine, an enrichment program for special needs adults. They’ve been having a blast enjoying kickball games together and making cards and care packages for patients at local hospitals.
She is a joy to her College and Career mentors. Cliff and Jayna Harris shared, “One of the things we try to include in our parenting is the joy of giving back to the community through service and mission. We could not be more proud of Helen!”
Helen’s involvement and independence comes as no surprise to her former teaching parents, David and Stacy Young. They shared a sweet photo of their first service project with Helen seven years ago at an area dog shelter!
