Earlier this month, one of our young residents saw our CEO, Vince Duran, playing catch with his kids outside and anxiously asked to join in. It quickly became apparent that this young boy did not know how to throw or catch a baseball. After the fifth toss, he awkwardly caught the baseball and began to scream and yell. “This is my first catch… I caught the ball. I did it!” He then held the baseball up high as if it were a prized possession, and indeed it was.
This remarkable resident has lived at Boys and Girls Country for the past two years, arriving as an energetic 5-year-old. We were surprised to learn that he had not played catch before. He lives in a full cottage, and most outdoor activities are done as a group, with basketball and football being the popular choices. However, he has now found a new love for baseball.
Many of our kids will have their “first” experiences while living at Boys and Girls Country. The list is endless – their first birthday party, first bike ride, first home run, first vacation, and even their first catch. We are grateful to have witnessed this milestone and look forward to celebrating all the “firsts” that the future will hold.
