Where Healing Leads to Hope
How professional, on-site counseling helps the children and young adults of Boys and Girls Country find their voice and discover their potential.
When "Amy" (a pseudonym used to protect her privacy) arrived at Boys and Girls Country in 2023, she was placed by an aunt who had served as a consistent maternal figure in her life. Amy came from a close-knit extended family that included siblings and cousins—some of whom had also spent time at BGC.
In her early days at BGC, Amy struggled with self-confidence and self-worth. She avoided eye contact with adults, spoke softly while looking down and hesitated to try new activities out of fear of failing or not being "good enough." Like many young people who have learned to stay silent in order to stay safe, Amy often held herself back from opportunities where she might otherwise have thrived.
That began to change when Amy started counseling. With consistent encouragement and support, she slowly learned how to identify and name her emotions, express her thoughts and advocate for herself. Each small step forward built momentum. As her confidence grew, so did her willingness to take healthy risks—trying new activities, engaging more openly with peers and adults and lifting her eyes to meet theirs. Counseling helped Amy develop a more positive self-image and a growing belief that her voice mattered.
Once hesitant to speak up, Amy now meets adults' eyes with a bright smile and steady confidence. Her journey reflects what is possible when young people are met with care, patience and opportunity.
Today, Amy's transformation is remarkable. She carries herself with confidence and pride, has tried out for—and earned placement on—school athletic teams, and is enrolled in a medical career pathway program at her high school. Most recently, she achieved her certification as an EKG technician, an accomplishment she celebrates with well-earned confidence.
Just as meaningful, Amy now encourages other residents to participate in counseling, often sharing how it helped her find her voice and believe in herself. Amy's story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, healing leads to hope—and potential turns into purpose.

In addition to traditional counseling services, BGC also offers equine therapy through trusted local nonprofit partners, providing a unique therapeutic opportunity for our children and young adults.
Together, these partners provide psychological evaluations, equine-assisted therapy and comprehensive wraparound support alongside our on-site counseling services, ensuring each child receives the full continuum of care they deserve.
None of this life-changing work would be possible without the compassion and generosity of Houston Methodist Hospital, Tomball Regional Health Foundation and other supporters.
