Volunteer Spotlight

Helen has volunteered at Boys and Girls Country for over 20 years. What started as a one-time volunteer opportunity turned into a decades-long relationship. Helen first came to know BGC when she brought her youth group to volunteer at our annual Spring Festival. From there, she fell in love with our mission and became a valued member of the BGC family.

If you were to ask Helen what her favorite thing about volunteering was, she would say there’s way too many to choose from. She is involved in all aspects of service on our campus. She has served as a mentor, event sponsor and holiday organizer. During the pandemic, she prepared and delivered meals to cottage-bound families, and on Mother’s Day she curated gift bags to make sure each cottage mother was appreciated and acknowledged for her tireless efforts. In addition to her service at BGC, Helen leads an outreach group at her church where members can come together and give back to local charities and organizations whose primary focus is serving young mothers and children. Helen says that her motivation for volunteering at BGC is to help provide deserving children with the same loving, faith-filled home with which she was blessed as a child.

In the months leading up to Spring Festival, Helen who has been lovingly dubbed “the basket queen” from those closest to the organization, can be found on campus almost every week, curating and creating hundreds of beautiful baskets to be sold at our annual event. “Helen is the definition of service,” says BGC Volunteer Coordinator, Susan Breaux. “If there is a need, we know Helen will answer the call to serve.”

Helen’s unwavering dedication and selfless service embody the spirit that defines Boys and Girls Country. Her impact reaches far beyond the tasks she undertakes; her commitment to our mission resonates within the hearts of the children and families she serves. As we express our gratitude to Helen and all our volunteers, we recognize that their commitment is the cornerstone of our success. Together, we will continue to provide a nurturing and supportive environment where children can flourish and reach their fullest potential.
